Fiji spa queen ground breaking new role

Fiji’s key tourism awards body has appointed its first female chair in Debra Sadranu, a pioneer of the country’s spa and beauty industry.

The Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards (FETA) Board of Trustees was established in 1991 to annually recognise operators and individuals with exceptional contribution to Fiji tourism, and is run by a voluntary committee.

“It really is an honour for me to be appointed as chair and to be the first woman to take up the role is definitely a bonus,” Mrs Sadranu said.

“As I step into the role, I’d like to acknowledge the great work of my predecessor, Mr Bill Whiting, and his team for really laying a great, solid foundation for all the activities planned for this year, including the FETA awards.”

Her business, Essence of Fiji Group started as a spa academy 25 years ago and now includes a sustainable sea grape harvesting program, skincare brand and rejuvenation centre.

A prolific local businesswoman and mentor, Mrs Sadranu has also delved in municipal roles as a special administrator for Fiji’s Lautoka City and the towns of Ba, Nadi and Sigatoka.

Tourism was Fiji’s largest GDP earner prior to the COVID pandemic in 2020 and continues to make a comeback since the country reopened to international travellers in December 2021.
