The Marshall Islands have become the second Pacific nation to announce dates for their pageant to choose a new Miss Marshall Islands.
Samoa started the ball rolling and the Marshallese have followed suit however there is no word yet if a Miss Pacific pageant will be held where winners from each of the Pacific nations will compete.
The week long Miss Marshall Islands 2022 will start on September 25 and the winner will be crowned on October 1.
Marshall Islands Office of Commerce, Investment and Tourism (OCIT) developed the Miss Marshall Islands program to recognise and promote young Marshallese women and the issues that they are focused on, as well as to develop events that will promote the Marshall Islands.
The first pageant was held in October of 2019, and it was certainly a hit for the RMI as it elevated the profile of the Marshall Islands. However with the pandemic, the event was stood down for the last two years.
OCIT chief executive officer Carlos Domnick and Marshall Islands based charity organisation Kora in Okrane (KIO) president Angeline Heine-Reimers have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formally commence their cooperation to organise the event.
Mr Domnick said OCIT has a keen interest in working with KIO to make this next pageant a success and a highlight of the Marshall Islands amidst all that is happening around the world.
Ms Heine said this event will raise future leaders of the Marshall Islands among the female youth and also bring to the fore issues affecting the younger generation.
“It is hoped this upcoming pageant will do even more. The winning contestant will represent the Marshall Islands in both the domestic and international arenas as well as the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant, which is the premier pageant of the Pacific region,” said Mr Domnick.
“It is hoped that this event will raise global awareness of the Marshallese brand, thereby generating interest in visiting the Marshall Islands, learning about its culture and bring about investment opportunities that will benefit the Marshallese people.”
So far 23 contestants have been confirmed for Miss Marshall Islands 2022.
While there is still no confirmation if the Miss Pacific pageant will take place this year, Samoa will hold its pageant in September as part of its independence celebration.
